Biography

Ana Ozz is a self-taught painter who lives and works in Valencia, Spain. She grew up in the north, by the water, where winters are long and the landscape stays blue and grey for months. In Valencia, ochre, sand, terracotta and olive came into her palette, and most of her paintings now sit between those two sets of colors.

She paints at a table by the window, early in the morning or late at night, with a cup of coffee and her cat close by. Most of her paintings are watercolors on 300 gsm, 100% cotton cold-press paper, from 8x8 to 22x30 inches. She works on dry paper, sometimes from a pencil sketch, and adds the black lines last. Larger pieces are acrylic on canvas, built up in layers, up to about 100x100 cm.

Her best-known series shows women without faces. They are seen from behind, sitting by a window or looking out to sea, often in a deep blue dress, sometimes with a black cat. "My women have no faces because I want their stories to remain open," she says.

The second line of her work is abstraction. She starts from something seen in nature, a horizon, a shoreline, a pairing of colors, and removes details until only color, line and empty space remain. Some of these paintings are organic shapes in earth tones crossed by fine lines; others are calmer geometric pieces in indigo and gray that she calls "quiet architecture". Alongside them she paints winter landscapes in blue, still lifes, the coast, and a new series of flowers, Floral Stillness.

Saatchi Art selected her work for its curated collection "Winter Textures", and the iCanvas blog included her in "10 Watercolor Artists Who Capture Beauty in Every Stroke". Her work has been selected for group exhibitions at Artseeker Gallery in New York (2023), Blacklight Gallery in Valencia (2024) and Expo 2020 Dubai, and for an online exhibition of A.L.L. Gallery, Italy (2024). In 2026 two of her geometric acrylics, from the series Inner Territory, were shown in El Territorio Español at Bloom Gallery, Valencia, and published in the exhibition catalogue.

She has sold her paintings through Saatchi Art since 2021, as well as through Singulart, Artsy and her Etsy shop, AnaOzzGallery. More than 140 of her original paintings are in private collections in the United States, France, Belgium, Germany and other European countries. Each original is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Artist statement

I paint stillness: a woman by a window, the line between sky and shore, the calm between one thought and the next.

I work mostly in watercolor, on dry paper, sometimes from a pencil sketch and sometimes straight in color. The composition often changes as I go, and I don't always know where a painting will end. The black line comes last. It marks the edge of a wash, the curve of a shoulder, a horizon. Larger works are acrylic on canvas, built up slowly in layers.

My palette pairs the cold blues and greys of northern winters with the ochre, sand, terracotta and olive of Valencia, where I live. I often put cold and warm colors side by side in one painting.

My women are seen from behind, by a window or facing the sea. I leave out their faces because I want their stories to remain open. In the abstract paintings I start from something I have seen in nature and take details away until only color, line and empty space remain.
